Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Rare and important shelf with wooden sculpture depicting Gargoyle, with fine carving.

Gargoyles are grotesque depictions of monstrous-looking animals that were widely used in Gothic cathedrals, where sculptures of these monstrous animals were usually placed outside the buildings to "drive away" evil spirits.

The wood with which the sculpture was made has marked veins that highlight its quality, as well as the meticulous rendering of the anatomical details - and more - show the high quality of the carving.

The work has a patina and is in a good general state of conservation. Some small defects, such as in the wings of the gargoyle and in one of the two ears, compatible with the antiquity of the object. Present some woodworm holes, part of which have been filled with beeswax, and slight signs compatible with age. The wood was then revived with straw oil.

Dimensions: approximately 55x44x25cm.

Now in a private collection, it comes from a renowned Italian auction house.

It will be shipped in a custom-made wooden box to ensure maximum protection of the sculpture during transport. 67572791
