Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Until 1899 Bernard de Hoog lived and worked in Amsterdam, where he attended the Quellinusschool and then became an apprentice to John Frederik Hulk and Jan van Essen. In 1899 he settled in Laren, where he would stay until 1902. He then lived and worked successively in Haarlem, Bussum and The Hague. The typical themes of the Laren School, in particular farmer's interiors, would continue to determine his oeuvre even after his departure from Laren. He often painted mothers with children. His style was strongly influenced by the Haagse Scholers Jozef Israëls and Albert Neuhuys, as well as by Hein Kever. His work, especially in the use of chiaroscuro, also testifies to a thorough study of the old masters, more specifically Pieter de Hooch and Rembrandt.

In addition to interior pieces, De Hoog also painted portraits, genre scenes, landscapes and flower still lifes. He also made lighter watercolors. His work was very popular in America, Canada and England, where he exhibited regularly and sold a lot. He passed away in 1943, aged 77. 67586761
