Seneca (in Latin Lucius Annaeus Seneca), born in Cordoba, in the south of Spain, between the year 4 BC. J.-C. and the year 1 apr. AD, died April 12, 65 AD. J.-C., is a philosopher of the Stoic school, a playwright and a Roman statesman of the 1st century. He is sometimes called Seneca the Philosopher, Seneca the Tragic or Seneca the Younger to distinguish him from his father, Seneca the Elder.

Advisor to the imperial court under Caligula, exiled on the accession of Claudius then recalled as tutor to Nero, Seneca played an important role as an advisor to the latter before being discredited and driven to suicide. His philosophical treatises such as On Anger, On Happy Life or On the Shortness of Life, and above all his Letters to Lucilius, expose his Stoic philosophical conceptions. For him :

“The sovereign good is a soul that despises external events and rejoices in virtue. »

His tragedies constitute one of the best examples of Latin tragic theatre, with works that will nourish classical French theater of the 17th century such as Médée, Œdipe or Phèdre. 67193513
