Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Extraordinary and luxurious copy, one of the only 2 printed on Japan paper (in addition to 5 on Holland paper), privately distributed by the compiler, Léo Rouanet, as he himself indicates in a handwritten note on the endpaper.

The binding is signed by Joseph Bretault, an apprentice in Victor Champs' workshop. Bretault, according to Octave Uzanne, contributed original novelties to half bindings, as can be seen in the one we offer. Another peculiarity of this copy, in addition to the enormous thickness of the paper and its bony color, is that each sheet is cut in a different size.

Hors d'oeuvres (intermèdes) are humorous plays in one act, written in prose or verse, which used to be performed between the first two acts of classical Spanish theater comedies. They reached their heyday in Spain at the end of the 16th century and during the first half of the 17th. In this book, the Hispanist Léo Rouanet selects, translates and annotates some of the most outstanding, including several by Luis Quiñones de Benavente, "Don Pegote" and "La rabia" by Pedro Calderón de la Barca or "La cárcel de Sevilla". ”, sometimes attributed to Miguel de Cervantes.

Leo Rouanet (1863-1911)
Intermèdes espagnols (hors d'oeuvres) du XVIIe siècle / traduits, avec une préface et des notes, par Léo Rouanet. — Paris : A. Charles, editor, 1897 (printers Noizette et Cie). — [4], 321, [3] p. ; 22cm (full).

Period binding in half-leather (Moroccan) with corners, signed "Bretault" on the verso of the flyleaf. Spine with 5 nerves, studded with small golden irons forming a beautiful composition. Plans lined with water paper, matching the endpaper; golden top cut.

Superb state of conservation, both the binding and the paper. It would only be worth noting a very slight wear of the leather in the area where the spine joins the covers. 67472667
