Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. The work "Talibé" was made using hand-cut stencils. About 130 hours of cutting to make the different stencils.

"Talibé" was first produced in Calavi Kpota in Benin, then in France in Nantes and Trentemoult.

The child represented is a talibé from Ouakam in Senegal.

In the etymological sense of the term, a “talibé” (plural of Talib) is a pupil or disciple learning the Koran.

In Senegal, the talibé is generally a boy aged 5 to 15, from a poor, often rural family, entrusted by his parents to a Koranic teacher (or marabout) so that the latter takes charge of his religious education. This education takes place in a daara, a Koranic school. In return, the talibé must do the housework, and is mostly forced to beg in the streets in order to meet his needs and the needs of his master and his family.

During its Djiguene & Goor project in West Africa, Jinks Kunst worked with structures helping the Talibés. Among other things, he produced frescoes on site to make their reception area (outside the daara) more convivial.

Jinks Kunst is not a fan of stencil cutting machines. The pleasure of creating also goes through manual cutting.
