"The Story of Gil Blas de Santillane tells, in the first person, how Gil Blas, born in poverty to a squire and maid from Santillane, Cantabria, left Oviedo at the age of ten- seven years to go to the University of Salamanca, after having been educated by his canon uncle. His student future is quickly turned upside down when, barely on the way, chance gives him as a companion and as a forced accomplice to highway robbers and makes him make the disagreeable acquaintance of justice Necessity makes him a valet, then the vicissitudes of life lead him through all the degrees of domesticity and enable him to observe closely all classes of society, in the State and in the Church. He is mingled with rogues of all ranks and, by contagion of example more than by nature, he himself practices roguery, and with all the less scruple as it exercises bigger."
