THREE PRECIOUS ALDINES BY PETRUS CANISIUS, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH AND GREAT SIXTEENTH CENTURY DISCLOSURE
Three books bound in a substantial volume printed in Aldo Manuzio's typography in Venice and containing the work of Pietro Canisio, Dutch humanist and great popularizer of Catholic culture in Europe.
Aldo was the first to adopt a typographical brand represented by the Anchor and the Dolphin. In addition to the format, the Aldine editions are famous for the elegance of the character, the correctness of the text, the refinement of the paper and the bindings (Aldine bindings), probably prepared in his own workshop.

CONTENTS
Peter Canisius, in Latin Petrus Canisius, in Dutch Pieter Kanijs, (Nijmegen, 1521 - Freiburg, 1597), Dutch man of letters and humanist, was proclaimed saint and doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI.
During his stay in Cologne Canisius came under the influence of the Brabantine mystic Nicolaus van Esch and that of Ignatius of Loyola's companion Pierre Favre
Having come into contact and become a friend of Cardinal d'Augusta, Otto of Waldburg, a very influential character at the time, began to make his way in the order. Sent to Trento in 1547, then to Bologna, to the Council, he published one of the most powerful instruments of Catholic instruction, education and propaganda, namely the famous Summa of 1555 (circulated in Austria under the name of Cathechismus Ferdinandi), whose exceptional importance is revealed by the numerous editions that were made in little more than a century, which add up to several hundreds.
Greek-Latin edition of the catechism of Peter Canisius, Oeniponti, for Hieronymum Agricolam

The most important works of Canisius, those for which he exercised a great spiritual and moral influence on his time, are, in addition to the Summa doctrinae christianae ... in usum Christianae pueritiae (Vienna 1555, but the definitive edition is that of Cologne of 1556), the Parvus Catechismus Catholicorum (Cologne 1558, critical ed. by F. Streicher; Munich 1933, also appeared in German translation, Dillingen 1560), which is a compendium of the Summa and which enjoyed very wide favour; also the refutation of the Centuriators of Magdeburg, which, unfinished, consists of two parts (Commentariorum de Verbi Dei liber primus: in quo de Sanctissimi Praecursoris Domini Joannis Baptistae Historia evangelica pertractatur, Dillingen 1571; De Maria Virgine... libri quinque, Ingolstadt 1577 ) then combined in a single work in two volumes Commentariorum de Verbis corruptelis (1583).

Among the other works by Canisius are the Lectiones et Predicationes Ecclesiasticae (Ingolstadt 1556); the Principia Grammatices (ibid. 1556); the Institutiones et Exercitamenta christianae pietatis (Antwerp 1566); Notae in Evangelicas lectiones (Fribourg 1591); the Enchiridion pietatis quo ad precandum Deum instruitur princeps catholicus, dedicated to the future emperor Ferdinand II, but published only in 1751 (a.); and a quantity of other writings, in Latin and German, above all of an educational ascetic nature.
