Very beautiful statue of Mary with child and angels, "Notre Dame des Victoires".
This statue is a very well-known depiction of Mary in France but also in Belgium.
Until the beginning of the 20th century, people had to pay a kind of tax on windows and doors. However, one could escape the tax if one placed a statue of a saint in front of it. For those who found a wood-carved statue or a porcelain statue too expensive, a statue of a saint in plaster often offered a solution.
The sculpture here has a very nice polychrome coloring and it bears the marks of the years (see photos) but it is actually in a pretty good vintage condition.
