FIRST EDITION OF THE CATECHISM OF THE COUNCIL OF TRENTO ALSO KNOWN AS THE TRIDENTINE CATECHISM
or Roman catechism, officially promulgated by the Catholic Church gathered during the Council of Trent in the 16th century. The council understood the catechism as the official manual for popular instruction, with the aim of providing an authoritative manual which was the basis for the teachings of priests to the lay faithful and which helped to affirm Catholic doctrine against the Protestant Reformation.
The explosion of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century and the new printing technologies caused a large quantity of popular theological treatises and catechisms to spread in Europe, most of which promulgated doctrines in open contrast to the Catholic Church and considered by it to be heretical . The parish priests and priests most in direct contact with the people often did not have the theological knowledge necessary to oppose the reformatory ideals which spread rapidly and led many faithful away from the church of Rome.

CONTENTS
In the intentions of the Church the catechism, although written primarily for parish priests, was also understood as a fixed and stable scheme of teachings for the faithful, especially regarding grace; for this task the work faithfully follows the dogmatic definitions of the council. The text is divided into four parts: The Faith and its Symbol; The Sacraments; The precepts of the Decalogue; The Prayer and in particular the Our Father.
