A fine terracotta sculpture of a nude, measuring 20.5cm in height and weighing 961g, sitting on a rock and scooping water with a scallop, in a delicate and thoughtful pose. Signed to the base by the artist, A.M. de Korte.

Maurice de Korte was a Belgian sculptor who started his artistic education at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Brussels under the tutelage of Victor Rousseau, later becoming himself a professor of sculpture at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Tournai/Doornik. In 1935, during the construction of the centenary celebration palaces, he was commissioned by the architect Joseph van Neck to make two of the gargantuan statues that grace the facade of Palace 5 in Heizel, Brussels.
