Charming illustrated edition of the novel by André Gide published in 1919, adorned with 16 original drypoints by Marianne Clouzot.

Rare copy, one of 50 on white Rives vellum to which a black state has been added with remarks on the engravings and a silk proof of the cover.
Copy n°46, very complete with the suite with remarks and the silk proof.

In sheets, illustrated cover and double slipcase.
Condition: Impeccable cover and interior. Solid shirt and case. Slight traces of friction and dirt. In very good shape.

This novel deals with the conflict between religious morality and feelings.
Summary: "In the 1890s, Gertrude, a young blind girl and orphan of her aunt who has just died, is taken in by a pastor who offers her to live with his wife, Amélie, and their five children in a small cottage in the Jura Neuchâtel, Switzerland. In his diary, the pastor recounts the Protestant education he gave to Gertrude, with which he ended up falling in love. His son Jacques also fell in love with Gertrude. When the pastor realized this, he order to leave."
