First edition of this monograph whose main object is the study of French customs during the twenty years preceding the Revolution. The author compares the history of Sweden under Gustav III, which he considers close to that of France:
"the Sweden of Gustavus III, so open to eighteenth-century ideas, so intertwined with our own history at that time thanks to the sympathetic genius of its people and its king, offered a pleasant setting, with sufficient perspective and 'pleasant proportions'.

Book illustrated with 2 portraits in frontispieces (Gustave 3 and Count Fersen), a laminated photo out of text depicting Marie Antoinette at Trianon, after the painting by Wertmüller at Gripsholm; and 4 handwriting facsimiles.
