Joseph Anton von Gegenbaur (6 March 1800 in Wangen, Allgäu - 31 January 1876 in Rome) was a German painter.

Gegenbaur studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1815 to 1823 under Robert von Langer. During this time, he created the motifs "Saint Sebastian" and "Two Shepherds" as an altarpiece for the church of his hometown Wangen in the Allgäu, based on the model of Geßner's idylls. From 1823 to 1826 and from 1829 to 1835 he continued his studies in Rome. There he distinguished himself above all in colour painting. In the royal castle of Stuttgart he later painted the works "Eltern nach dem Verlust des Paradieses" and "Moses, Wasser aus dem Felsen schlagend" in this technique.
