Superb treatise on obstetrics, the most popular in France in the 18th century -
André Levret (1703-1780), midwife to Madame la Dauphine, mother of Louis XVI, invented a number of instruments used in the delivery room and modified the design of forceps.
"Besides the introduction of a curved forceps, Levret invented several other obstetric instruments and made fundamental observations on pelvic anomalies.
His work covered the entire field of obstetrics and remained a standard work for many years" (Garrison).
This work, which was, before that of Baudeloque, the best on the art of childbirth, has been translated into different languages.
