Son of art and child prodigy, at the age of eight he manages to impress the Turin painter Giacomo Grosso who buys him two paintings to encourage him. He trained artistically at the Accademia Albertina in Turin under the guidance of his father Giuseppe Cavalla, Andrea Marchisio and Cesare Ferro. In 1924 he arrived in Bordighera where he took up lodgings at the Piccolo Lord hotel. He made friends with Giuseppe Balbo, with whom around 1931 he undertook a long study trip through Europe to north-west Africa.
