Very valuable works for artistic and economic value, by a valid artist active in Italy in the late nineteenth century, which illustrates a Portrait of a Gentlewoman.
The work, signed and dated in the center right, depicts a portrait of a half posed woman. The woman is represented here in three quarters with an elegant and authoritative posture, with composed hair and with elegant and classic clothing: a well-tailored dress, with a white shirt and an embroidered light blue waistcoat, typical of the portraits of important subjects of the period especially in the mid-nineteenth century. With equal sprezzatura, the face catalyzes the attention of the viewer, adhering to precise canons of painting of that era, represented here posing with a carefree attitude. The painting, of excellent quality, note the details of the face and the dress, and it is certainly a woman belonging to the upper middle class.
The work is evidently of high quality, it expresses the pictorial characteristics of Italian neoclassicism and romanticism with extreme elegance and sensuality. In the work under discussion, the artist's will to seek his own figurative manner, an expression of individual thought and feeling, is not lacking. In fact, the artist seems to know the taste of his contemporaries well, certainly specialized in portrait and figurative painting, honed in classicist ways in portraying the female subject. In portraying this beautiful Portrait of a Gentlewoman, the artist offers a more refined interpretation, full of cultured references resolved with a certain originality. The image, in fact, is perfectly resolved in the compositional idea, in line with the eclectic style very fashionable in the official circles of the time.
From a stylistic point of view, the work in question represents a profound intensity of expression, through the fusion of chromatic masses with a vibrant work.
The figures of this pastel which is influenced by romanticism and realism but which is also declined with an entirely subjective pleasure for that past which recalls the works of classicism and impressionist works of the Italian school of the past.
With regard to its state of conservation, the work is in fairly fair general condition considering the age of the painting; The pictorial surface has a patina. No major restoration work on the pictorial surface is noted. The painting comes from a purchase made at an auction, and therefore is accompanied by a certificate of guarantee and legitimate origin. The measurements of the crayon are cm. 60 x 45 approximately. The work has a thin golden frame (the dimensions of the frame are approx. 81 x 66 x 3 cm, glass, defects). "The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided to you at no additional cost so it is ready to display as soon as it arrives.
