Castelli dish from the late 1800s.
Abruzzo landscape majolica, good condition, signs of ageing.
It depicts a magnificent village nestled on the slopes of the Gran Sasso, Abruzzo.
Castelli is one of the most renowned Italian ceramic centres, which became famous in the sixteenth century. The characteristic that more than any other identifies Castelli majolica is the pentacromia, that is to say the decoration in five colors (yellow, green, blue, orange and manganese brown). Over time, attention to the colors was also added to the subjects represented on the artefacts. Floral motifs alternated with animals, landscapes and hunting or mythological scenes.
The ancient works created by the most renowned local families, including Lollo, Pompei, Grue, Castelli, Fuina and Cappelletti, can be admired in some of the most important art museums on the planet, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris or the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. 67487575
