First edition of this important treatise on military medicine published by the surgeon and hygienist Jean Colombier (1736-1789), best known for his role in the reform of the medical organization in France.
In 1778, Jacques Necker (who knows Colombier) is in charge of the reform of the hospital service; Colombier then became inspector general of hospitals, begging depots and prisons in 1780. He published various reports, including on epidemics and rabies. In 1786, he became a councilor of state. He participated in 1788 in the reform of the health service.
This book is divided into three parts. The first deals with the health of Gens de Guerre; the second, Military Hospitals & the third Wartime Illnesses. The set comprises five volumes.
Period binding. Full marbled calfskin, smooth back adorned with fleurons and gilt boxes. Mosaic leather pieces indicating the title and the volume number. Library label at the bottom.
Condition: Lack of fragments on the caps, rubbing from use, some pierced corners. Decorative and attractive bindings. Fresh interiors, rare pitting. In good condition.
