The books are uniformly bound in full brown calf with double gilt fillet border, spines divided into six compartments by raised bands.
Rear board volume 4 is detached; all joints are cracked in whole or in part, boards are firmly held; spines are showing surface cracks and creases, minor chips to head and foot ends, top band lacking volumes 3 and 4 , all labels lacking; boards are rubbed, crazing in parts, a few minor surface abrasions and scrapes, the occasional minor soil mark.

The books contain a total of 54 leaves of copper plate.
Sporadic spots and brown blemishes, mostly minor; occasional soil marks/stains, mostly minor, most pronounced to page 51 and the plate facing page 48 in Volume 1; sporadic faint toning, some marginal, some full page; occasional faint browning from offsetting; heavy typeset at times, making the text overleaf visible through, and with a text imprint verso of some of the plates.
The majority of the plate illustrations are clean.
The occasional plate and letterpress bound in slightly askew.
The frontispiece plate volume 1 has loss to the bottom outer corners; there is very occasional minor nicks, dings, tears and loss to edges.
The final plate in volume 6 is almost complete detached, browned and a tad tattered at the fore edge.
Otherwise all tightly bound.
