Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Very nice lot around the estate of the famous philosopher, Baron d'Holbach.

When Baron d'Holbach died in 1789, the baron's will was contested by his servants Vincent, David and Plocque. This case will last for several years. The baron's steward, Toussaint Berlize, then took care of defending the interests of the son, Charles-Marius. In the end, the servants will be dismissed.

Our documents therefore relate to the attempt at conciliation with Plocque in 1793 following the trial of 1792, a failed attempt which led Baron d'Holbach to appeal in January 1793.

The documents in this set are therefore:
- a copy of the first judgment of 1792. 4p in-4. It is after this judgment that the attempt at conciliation and the appeal take place.
- a statement of the costs incurred. 1p in-4.
- a paper from the conciliation office showing that the attempt failed. 2p folio.
- a paper following the non-conciliation in view of the appeal. 2p in-4.
- a copy of summons to appear at the request of Baron d'Holbach in December 1792. 2p in-4.
- a paper with the address of Baron d'Holbach, having probably served as an envelope for the whole thing.

Beautiful set, rare historical testimony. 67545465
