"A woman only loves madly! And if the love is not reciprocal, nothing is more terrible than a woman in love." This is affirmed in Euryale and Lucretius by Enea Silvio Piccolomini (1405-1464), who was to become pope a few years later under the name of Pius II.

Written in Latin, the plot takes place in Siena, during the winter of 1432-1433, during a historic event: the passage of Sigismund of Luxembourg who goes to Rome to receive the imperial crown. But it is above all a passionate love story between Lucrece, under twenty, badly married but well guarded, and Euryale, a handsome knight of thirty-two.

Very fashionable since Boccaccio, the theme of passion in conflict with marriage is treated here with mischievous humour. We find there the victory of intelligence in the service of love, moments of terror and joy, obstacles overcome, and a magnificent strength in the freedom to love.

Enea Silvio Piccolomini was crowned "Poet Laureate" in 1442 by Emperor Frederick III for his poetic and romantic work. He will also become secretary of this emperor who will use him as an ambassador.
