Magnificent first illustrated edition of this masterpiece by Georges Rodenbach (1855-1898) whose original edition appeared in 1897 at Charpentier, as a kind of echo to his Bruges-la-morte (1892). In a more realistic than symbolist vein, this time, the text recounts the debates which animate the city around the supporters of the Bruges-seaport or Zeebrugge project and the defenders of a city of art intended for the elite of humanity. The poet fears that the development of the commercial port contributes to destroy the heritage and the medieval spirit of Bruges, as was partly the case of Ghent, prey to galloping industrialization.?

The book is illustrated with 29 etchings, protected under serpente, and 36 initials by the Belgian painter, draftsman, watercolourist, engraver and lithographer Louis Benoît Joseph Titz, born in Bruges on June 24, 1859 and died in 1932 in Brussels, which has magnificently captured the atmosphere of the small streets of Bruges overlooked by the imposing belfry: the cover, the title vignette, 3 headers for the triptych Le Rêve / L'Amour / L'Action, 3 culs -de-lamp, and 21 full-page inset plates.

Freemason very active in Brussels, Louis Titz was a member of the Kumris circle. After studying painting at the Brussels Academy, he produced a post-impressionist portrait and landscape work. He paints women's faces, represents interiors and urban views. He also produced posters and illustrations for bibliophile books.

In sheets, illustrated folded cover. Publisher's slipcase and case in light blue, title label in black morocco. Author's name, title and date in gold.

Rare edition, limited to 280 copies, this one of 200 printed on Marais vellum (N 134).

Condition: In excellent condition, slight traces on the back of the shirt and water stains on the edge of the case. Impeccable cover and interior.
