Interesting oil painting on board of good quality, depicting a reclining female Nude. The unsigned work depicts a young naked woman lying on the bed with an elegant and sensual posture without falling into vulgarity, looking at the observer. The female nude is portrayed with a central shot, with an almost neutral background, colored with yellow-ochre hues. We are, in fact, in front of that type of pictorial works that portray scenes with nudes aiming to enhance female beauty always following the classic methods of past masters with the ability to idealize women's bodies to the maximum. This is an ideal born in the second half of the nineteenth century which sees the female world as much more passionate than it had been previously. The pictorial scenes of nudes in fact mainly show us the change of ideas in society with respect to female charm; the taste remained chaste throughout the seventeenth century, from the eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century the charming and flirtatious type was preferred, after which instead began that of the haughty woman capable of rejecting the hypocrisies of the Victorian era.
In the work under discussion, the artist's will to seek his own figurative manner, an expression of individual thought and feeling, is not lacking.
From a stylistic point of view, the canvas in question represents a profound intensity of expression which, alongside the meditative romantic character, not shy of symbolist reminiscences, and is accompanied by the cut of the image which is completely characteristic for the setting, through the fusion of chromatic masses – with detailed and vibrant brushstrokes – giving us a visual solidity that is rarely seen in 19th century European painting. The figures of this painting which is influenced by romanticism and realism but which is also declined with an entirely subjective pleasure for that past which recalls the Impressionist works of the French school of the past.
With regard to its state of conservation, the work is in fairly fair general condition considering the age of the painting; the patina, is in a good state of conservation, and with the study of the magnifying glass, the thickness of the pigments and some characteristics of the pictorial layer can be observed in the pictorial surface, compatible with the painting of the time. In grazing sunlight, on the other hand, the characteristics of the color applied as a body, and of the trend of the brushstroke, and of the crackle are visible. The painting comes from a purchase made in an Italian auction house.
The measurements of the oval-shaped tablet are cm. 23 x 17.5, within a gilded wooden frame (the measurements of the frame are approx. 31 x 38 x 5 cm, defects).
