Johann George Adam Forster (1754 – 1794), was a German naturalist, ethnologist and travel author. He took part in several scientific expeditions, including James Cook's second voyage to the Pacific Ocean. His travelogue of that journey (“A Voyage Round the World” -1777) was an important contribution to the ethnological knowledge of the peoples of Polynesia. It earned Forster, barely 22 years old, membership of the British Royal Society.
Forster is considered one of the founders of modern scientific travel literature and famous scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt saw him as an example. Most of his work consisted of essays on botany and ethnology, but he also translated several travel books, including a German translation of Cook's diaries. He also published several books about his travels in England and continental Europe. Forster died in Paris in 1794, barely 40 years old. 67369715
