19th Century Italian School, Antonio Zona
Antonio Zona (Gambellara, Vicenza, 1814 - Rome, 1892) was an Italian painter.
He was a pupil of Odorico Politi (1785-1846) and Michelangelo Grigoletti (1801-1870).
The two masters introduce him to the study and deepening of the 16th century Veneto.
This initial propensity towards the Renaissance masters leads him to work on tonal chords and intense chromatic research.
This technical predilection is almost immediately accompanied by the selection of a series of historical themes linked to the biographical events of the sixteenth-century masters.
History painting was soon joined by portraits, genre painting and some views of the cities in which he lived or stayed.
Although he remains mainly linked to the Venetian school and is a perfect interpreter of it, Antonio Zona spends a long time in Milan.
Here painting and research within Romanticism approach the expressions of Francesco Hayez (1791-1882).
In the seventies he moved to Rome, where he participated in various exhibitions of the Society of Amateurs and Connoisseurs.
In recent years, especially in the portrait genre, we note an evolution towards realism, even if the romantic taste remains as an indelible substrate.
In very good condition with possible minor signs of wear and ageing.
Late 19th-early 20th century wooden frame to complete the painting.
