Beautiful copy - The success of Maximes de La Rochefoucauld as they are commonly called was very great from their publication in 1665.

It was in Madame de Sablé's salon that these maxims circulated to be read and approved by the elite of the literate Grand Siècle.
The Marquise de Sévigné, the Comte de Bussy-Rabutin, the Prince de Conti and many others were at the forefront of these readings.
La Rochefoucauld, however, was not indulgent to anyone and all the Greats of the Kingdom of France could easily find themselves in these dazzling features.

Everyone at the end of the Grand Siècle has read the Maxims of La Rochefoucauld, and its echo has spread up to our 21st century. This book is one of the major books of French literature.
