Established in a luxurious binding executed in full raspberry red morocco, adorned with a rich rocaille decoration with young birds on the back and at the corners of the covers, beautiful cold plates with floral decoration forming a star in the center with a gilded monogram on the first cover, framing gilt fillets, interior frieze, all edges gilt.

First edition and first printing of 45 beautiful portraits (Juliet, Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, Anne Boleyn, Macbeth etc) including frontispiece and title, engraved on steel by the best London artists of the time. Prints on strong wove paper, under serpentes.
Gallery of 45 portraits, both critical and literary, of various Shakespearian female characters, composed by a host of writers including George Sand, Amable Tastu, Louise Colet, Emile Deschamps, Casimir Delavigne, Léon Halévy, Jay, etc.

CONDITION: Very nice copy, very decorative binding, solid and clean, minor handling defects, bright gilding. The marbled paper of the guards pierced at the level of the first hinge. Fresh and clean interior, some light foxing without gravity.
