Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. A rare and beautiful conical hand-painted Japonist glass vase by French glass pioneer François-Théodore Legras depicting bonsai/Asian pine trees. Circa 1880s-1910s.
This item was made during the height of « Japonism », an artistic trend that draws influence from Japanese art that was massively popular and exported to Europe. This vase cleverly blends Art Nouveau’s appreciation for nature with Japanese-influenced enamel painting. The painting is reminiscent of Japanese prints, with its bold and weighted outlines, painted on Legras’ famous « frost » semi-opaque background. This is a highly decorative and elegant item; a high end item by Legras’ standards.

An identical model with slightly different colour pattern is featured in authority book MICHEL M.-F. & J.-F, VITRAT, “François-Théodore Legras”, Collectif Legras, 2012. See picture.

NO chip, NO crack. Overall great condition with small signs of wear, but do keep in mind this vase is over 100 years old. :)
