Ubaldo Magnavacca was born on 22 August 1885 in Modena into a wealthy family of millers.

He manifests a precocious talent in drawing from life and, directed by the master Salvatore Postiglione, he studies at the Institute of Fine Arts in Modena where he specializes in engraving with the etching technique.

He soon received his first recognitions, winning the Magnanini prize in 1906 and the Poletti prize in 1912.

In 1914 he was admitted as an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the following year he won the Curlandese competition in Bologna.

In 1916, as an engraver, he participated in the Italian Exhibition in London with the works The bridge of sighs, The builders of wells, The apse of the Modena cathedral, The cathedral of Reim.

In the decade between 1920 and 1930, still as an engraver, he exhibited in five editions of the Venice Biennale.

In 1931 he took part in the 1st National Art Quadrennial in Rome.

From 1934 to 1944 he taught figure at the free evening school of the nude at the A. Venturi art institute. Nereo Annovi, Peppino Ascari, Iro Malavasi, Vittorio Magelli and Walter Morselli followed his courses.

His works are present in the collection of the Society for Fine Arts and Permanent Exhibition.

On 2 August 1957 he died at his home in Lerici where he used to retire. 67122917
