Céline's first published work
Published under his real name, Louis Destouches, and on his own account, this work closely follows The Life and Work of Philippe Ignace Semmelweis, thesis that the writer defended in May 1924. Printed in 5,800 copies then republished the following year, he seemed to respond to an order from the League of Nations, for whom he was then working. This text can thus be seen as a complementary thesis, quinine being a common theme in his correspondence. A rather technical vocabulary is used by the writer, in a neutral style, constituting a synthesis of the knowledge of the time on the subject.
The writer was also able to draw inspiration from the subject of the thesis of his great-great-uncle, Théodore Destouches, entitled Essay on the pharmaceutical preparations of cinchona.
The work was translated in the years following its publication into Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. 67373879
