Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. A 19th century toilet/handicraft table made during the French (late) Empire period around 1810-1820. The table is largely made of solid mahogany wood. The veneered parts such as the framework and base are made of a light (coniferous) wood type and glued with beautiful flamed (Flower) mahogany veneer.
The top is edged with a scratchy profile frame and has a mirror on the inside. There is a compartment under the top, containing a separate dovetail tray to store partitions with yarn and behind the lock there once was a hinged pincushion.
Underneath is a single drawer, with various compartments and a tray that can be pushed back and the green tarpaulin glued surface can also hinge.
The table has straight posts at the rear with a sleek plinth and various profile frames. At the front, the styles are volute-shaped and decorated with refined molded and gilded palm leaves and lion claw feet.
The whole rests on flat slippers at the back and on flat turned legs at the front.
The brass hinges of the top have been replaced for suitable ones, those of the small leaf and the iron that holds up the top are original. The lock with working key and inlaid brass entrance are also original.
Scattered over the furniture are a number of old, well-executed and unobtrusive restorations to the veneer.
The entire table has a beautiful deep warm color, beautiful patina and shine of the authentic polish finish. 67507921
