A very nice copy of an important work by mountaineer and engraver Edward Whymper, best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Trained as a wood engraver from an early age, Whymper was introduced to mountaineering when he was commissioned by the publisher William Longman to make illustrations of the Alps. This spurred him make other climbs, including many first ascents, and travelled as far as Greenland and Ecuador, recording his adventures in illustrated books and journals. "Often considered his magnum opus, Travels among the Great Andes of the Equator (1891-2) combines a popular account of his ascents with his detailed scientific observations"
(Peter H. Hansen for DNB).
