Tasso Torquato/Fasano Gabriele

The Neapolitan Tasso, zoe', La Gierosalemme liberata.

Naples - 1720 -
Francis Ricciardo

(18), (2), 410, (2) p.
In folio - 33 x 23 cm.

" This translation of the 'Gerusalemme Liberata' into Neapolitan was highly praised by contemporaries and particularly by Redi,
who compared it to Lalli's 'Aeneid in disguise'.
For us, he is primarily interested in the notes that accompany his work.
They are not only notes of words, but such that they recall people and things of that time; they tell of brigands, warriors and captains, of curious characters, doctors and abbots, anecdotes and customs are told, mottos and words of the Neapolitan dialect are explained.
It is rare to find complete specimens of all plates”

Italian text and translation in Neapolitan dialect in parallel columns.
Letter to Mr. Innazio Barretta, duke of Casalicchio, signed FR (i.e Francesco Ricciardo), with preface to the reader.

The work, edited by Fasano and printed by Ricciardi, qualifies as a luxury edition (thanks to the financing of Neapolitan aristocrats), illustrated by 20
(of 20) huge and precious illustrations of about 30 cm. , one for each song, engraved in copper.
The original value of the work is that it is a sort of encyclopedia of festive and popular Neapolitan style; the similarities of the text and the anecdotes of the notes bring places, characters, gastronomic recipes, proverbs, street games to the pages.

Beautiful late 19th century full vellum binding, with author and title printed on the spine.

Fairly well preserved interior.
First two leaves (including the title page) and last two leaves worn and with small marginal paper fragments missing, roughly restored.
Rare and small paper losses on the corners of the pages.
The 20 illustrations, preceded by blank pages, at the beginning of each song are splendid.
There are brownings, more or less accentuated, and traces of humidity in the text, mostly due to the thin consistency of the papers.
However, the illustrations and text are intact and enjoyable.
Small stain present on the last
chant (vigesimo).
Non-original looks.
