[Samuel Orchart Beeton] - Beeton’s Book Of Garden Management - circa 1881.

London, Ward Lock & Co. - Undated [1881] 12mo (19 x 13 cms) pp. viii. 759 + 36 publisher’s catalogue. Bound in publisher’s original dark green buckram hard boards with elaborate gilt titles to spine. Preface dated 1871 and signed H.P.D. Copious full page and in text illustrations 2 being in colour.

This anonymous work (the name of H. P. D., the author of the preface, is not known) was probably compiled by Samuel Orchart Beeton (1831–77), the publishing entrepreneur who made his wife's Book of Household Management one of the best-selling titles of the century. Originally published in 1871, (this being a very early reprint, probably 1881?) it is a complete guide to gardening for the enthusiastic middle-class amateur, with instructions on everything from choosing the site to garden design, plants and cultivation, 'fountains, fish-ponds, and ornamental waters' to the use of colour, interspersed with a detailed calendar of tasks to be carried out each month. It is illustrated with copious amounts of line engravings and 2 coloured plates.

Condition: Tight binding, covers complete and strong. Sunday school prize certificate pasted down to front free endpaper. (Dated January 1885) The half title page with previous owners long inscription in ink. Pages mainly clean with only limited amounts of foxing. A rare item in good condition.
