Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. The painter Jan Holtrop was born on October 5, 1917 in Lemmer, Friesland. When Jan was five years old, the Holtrop family moved to Hilversum, where they started a fish shop in the Leeghwaterstraat. Jan soon became an apprentice to the well-known Hilversum landscape painter Johan F.C. Scherrewitz (1853-1903), who had a studio at the Soestdijkerstraatweg in Hilversum. Scherrewitz's work was strongly influenced by the Hague School. His style and sense of color are also clearly reflected in Holtrop's work. Although Holtrop often worked in a more moody, almost romantic way, and developed his own sunnier, blonder palette.
An art dealership on the Kerkbrink was the first to sell paintings by Holtrop. And his work was exhibited for the first time – very successfully – in 1948, in the Gebr. Cook in Rotterdam.
