Superb work by Torquato Tasso who was an Italian poet, passed down to posterity for his epic, La Gerusalemme liberata (formerly translated under the title Jerusalem Delivered, today Jerusalem Liberated, 1580)

It is an epic poem in which he depicts, in the style of chivalric novels, the battles which opposed Christians to Muslims at the end of the First Crusade, during the siege of Jerusalem.

He died just as the pope was about to crown him "king of poets".
Until the beginning of the 19th century, Le Tasse was one of the most widely read poets in Europe:

- Jean-Jacques Rousseau was one of his admirers; he liked to read and reread Le Tasse.
- Auguste Comte made it the representative of modern epic literature in his positivist calendar, and Simone Weil saw in “Jerusalem Delivered” one of the highest expressions of Christian hope.
