Living relatively isolated (and guarded) in Paris after his exile, Rousseau wrote them between 1772 and 1776 in the form of an imaginary lawsuit brought against himself and from which he would emerge acquitted, his reputation henceforth saved in the eyes of posterity. If his Confessions scandalized (we only knew the first half of them), these dialogues appeared as the last cry of a condemned man, if not as certain proof of his madness. Rousseau finally resolved to entrust this extraordinary text to God himself by placing it on the high altar of Notre Dame de Paris?''
