BIOGRAPHY OF RAMON PALMAROLA ROMEU (1877-1954)

He was a renowned portrait painter. He also painted some landscapes.

He was a student of teachers Ramon Martí Alsina (1826-1894) and his son, Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857-1935).

In April 1902, he exhibited a portrait in the Sala Parés in Barcelona, together with the painter Isidre Nonell Monturiol (1872-1911), who presented a small painting, and the painter Ricard Martí Aguiló. (1)

In 1904 he received an award for his work Death of a Pastor.

In 1905 he went to Paris where he lived until 1914 and participated in various French national exhibitions.

In 1906 he painted the work Self-portrait.

He participated in the Exhibition of self-portraits of Spanish artists. Barcelona 1907-1908, in the Artistic Circle of Barcelona.

Upon his return to Spain, he lived for a few years in Madrid where he painted several portraits for the royal family. The most famous was a painting of the king on horseback, which accompanied him in many exhibitions, a work that was about to burn in a fire in South America, where he lost many paintings. Palmarola was made a Knight of the Order of Alfonso XII.

In 1922 he painted on the English admiral Sir Christopher Cradock, a work that today is part of the jewels of the National Maritime Museum of Chile.(2)

In 1923 he exhibited works such as Las dos rivales, at the Casino Español in Lima (Peru). Palmarola then lived at Les Corts 629 in Barcelona. (3)

In 1925 he exhibited in the city of Mendoza (Argentina), together with the Lleida painter Baldomer Gili Roig (1873-1926).

In June 1926 Palmarola exhibited at the Salon Fasce in Córdoba (Argentina) and in December at the Witcomb Gallery. (4)

On January 1, 1930, he held an exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art in Madrid (5). That year Palmarola had his studio in Sant Cugat del Vallès.

On November 3, 1931, he suffered injuries in a gas explosion at his home on Calle Gracia in Barcelona. (6)

In October 1932, he exhibited at the Layetanas Galleries in Barcelona, together with the painters Agapito Casas Abarca (1874-1964) and Pere Mayol Borrell (1906-1986).

In November 1934 he exhibited at the Salons of the Ritz Hotel in Barcelona, and repeated the following year.

In October 1939 he exhibited at the Galerías Layetanas in Barcelona.

In 1943 he exhibited individually at the Sala Parés in Barcelona.

In May 1944 he exhibited at the Sabadell Academy of Fine Arts, and that same year he exhibited works in Madrid.

At the beginning of the 50s he was one of the founding artists of the Fomento Graciente de las Artes, together with Josep Mª Camps Arnau, Lambert Escaler Milà, Xavier Llobet Hewitson, and Jordi Baijet Achon among others.

During his life he traveled through Europe and South America, where he held many exhibitions.

Palmarola's work is present in the Catalan art fund of the Museum of Fine Arts in Havana (Cuba), together with the prominent painters Ramon Casas, Joaquim Mir, and Anglada-Camarasa... He also has a work in the Regional Museum of Magallanes (Chile). 67602031
