Very valuable work for artistic value, oil on tablet by a valid southern artist active in the last century (mid '900). The work depicts a classic of Southern painting of that period, in particular a Seascape with a beautiful view of the Gulf of Palermo with the characteristic Monte Pellegrino (?) in the background, and on the left a small stretch of rock on the coast, in front of which stationed a fishing boat. In the wide-ranging view, the silhouette of the mountain struck by the morning sun's rays appears illuminated by a rosy light that detaches it from the background of a blue sky crossed by clouds that signal the enchantment of a beautiful day. At the same time, the gradations of the color of the sea, in the foreground, change from an intense blue of the farthest stretch to lighter shades as one approaches the shore, and light up with whitish reflections where the sun reverberates on the sea. This is certainly a work worthy of the lesson of the great Sicilian master Francesco Lojacono, first and then of Mario Mirabella. The panel, probably executed around the second half of the 1900s, the artist totally adheres to the naturalism of the aforementioned masters, tracing their schemes and luministic effects, and like other Sicilian students, takes up themes already addressed by them.
The present painting seems to be inspired by the works of Francesco Lojacono such as Monte Pellegrino (Oil on canvas, 42 x 82 cm private collection, signed “F. Lojacono” in the lower right corner, published in Maestri dell'Ottocento Italiano, Bottega Antica, 1990, p .47) subject that the latter performed repeatedly, being a theme dear to him; and by the master Mario Mirabella, where he too made several versions on the theme of the Gulf of Palermo, all with slight variations, which immediately received considerable public success, one of them View of Monte Pellegrino (private collection Palermo, oil on canvas, cm. 52 x 100; published in Bruno 2001, p. 44, table IV); which, the aforementioned panel, is very close to the works mentioned, even if technically it does not reach the levels of careful and acute analysis of reality carried out by the masters, despite appearing today, more than in the past, an extraordinary artist and interpreter of the Sicilian landscape, widely sought after and appreciated in Sicilian collections.
The luminosity, the chromatic intensity and the pictorial treatment also refer to Lojacono and Mirabella, set on the calibrated balance between formal synthesis and descriptive analysis, with strong plastic highlights, in which the brushstroke pursues every detail, returning the material evidence of the corroded colors of the sky, while the background of the sea remains rarefied, where the building is rendered in large patches of color, with effects of atmospheric transparency. The whole scene, represented here, gives the sensation of the temperature of the air, of its degree of humidity, of the light breeze that moves this air in a summer atmosphere in broad daylight. In this marine landscape the light seems to absorb the color into itself, making the brushstroke synthetic, and transmitting the sensation of the scorching southern sun. In fact, the colors are rich and mellow, and flooded with light, with a chromatic palette played on pastel colors, in an interesting play of light.
The work of excellent artistic and chromatic rendering is in good condition with the signs of aging visible in the photos. There are also full-bodied and material brushstrokes, with beautiful dense and lively colors of good quality, corresponding to a whimsical style. The painting is sold without a frame, although it is embellished with a new gilded frame and worked in the Baroque style (frame size approx. 46 x 108 x 6 cm).
