Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. This is a very early and rare woodcut !

The British Museum holds a later state of a woodcut from the same series after the woodblock was cut in half .Their print is from the 1517 edition of 'Keiserpergs Predig' by Grüniger.
Most of the woodcuts were previously used in publications printed by Grüninger from 1510 onwards, such as Plenarium (1510) or Geiler's sermons on the Virgin (1512)

The letterpress text on the backside is in old Dutch (!) and not German.
Our print is most likely from another Dutch earlier editions, anyway before cutting in half and before trimming of the other woodblock in 1517. (I have that other woodcut from the same source and it is before the block was cut in half)

Print made by: Hans Franck (1485-1522)
Painter and designer of woodcuts. Active in Basel 1505-22. Contemporary of Urs Graf whom he accompanied on numerous mercenary campaigns, He seems to have specialised in the type of decoration of buildings later used by Hans Holbein the Younger. identified him the Monogrammist HF (active 1516-22 in Basel) whose woodcuts reveal an inventive personality and are akin to the manner of Graf.
