Two henchmen seen nailing Christ on the cross, lying on the ground; another seen trying to lift the cross with a rope; behind, two men on horseback, one (Pilate?) wearing a turban, another with a hood; Mary and a female figure seen at centre.

Engraver, painter, art dealer and print publisher. Born in Antwerp, 1573. Son of Gerard de Jode . Married to Susanna Verhulst, niece of Pieter Coecke van Aelst and sister-in-law of Jan Brueghel I. Living in Italy in the 1590s; Probably back in Antwerp by 1599,

Maarten de Vos ( 1532 - 1603)
Painter and draughtsman. Pupil of Pieter de Vos, follower of Frans Floris in Antwerp and presumably of Jacopo Tintoretto in Venice. 1550-1558 in Italy; visited Rome, Venice and possibly Florence. In 1558 master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke. From 1575 mainly print designs. Documented as a Lutheran in 1584, adapting to the prevailing Catholicism in 1585. Apart from his sons Daniel (1568-1605) and Maarten the Younger (1576-1613), eleven pupils were registeredof whom only Wenzel Coeberger (1573) is well known. 66280517
