This painting shows a version of a composition by Van Dyck in the Museum of Art History in Vienna and dated 1628.
The proposed painting made between the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century presents a notable sweetness of the faces and it is possible to note that in this typology or iconographic series the figures are mostly portrayed in three quarters and it is possible to appreciate the presence in the canvas of a careful and accurate pictorial management for overlapping of chromatic samples, typical of the Vandyckian pictorial technique.
Canvas size: 127 x 83.8 cm, frame size 138 x 100.7 cm. The scene depicts the Holy Family.
The expression Holy Family, in Christian doctrine, means the family of Jesus, made up of the latter, Mary and Joseph.
In the Gospel of Matthew, after the adoration of the Magi, an angel warns Joseph to flee to Egypt as Herod wants to kill the baby Jesus; the holy family will therefore remain in Egypt until the death of the king, who had ordered the killing of all the newborn males of Bethlehem in a vain attempt to get rid of Jesus. When Herod died, the holy family returned to Nazareth.
The work is in a good state of conservation and presents the drawing, as well as the typical palette, by Van Dyck: the canvas is relined; there are small chromatic reintegrations.
The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and lawful provenance issued by our gallery, with photos as required by law. 67470343
