COTTAVOZ André was born in Saint-Marcellin in Isère in 1922 and died on July 8, 2012 in Vallauris.
Cottavoz is a French painter and lithographer who belonged to the Sanzists group. André Cottavoz studied at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon in 1939. Released and his studies completed, he participated in several exhibitions from 1945. In 1953, he won the Fénéon prize. In the meantime, an important movement was born: the New Figuration of the school of Lyon or sanzisme. Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus and Philibert-Charrin join André Cottavoz in expressing its tendencies, namely the search for a light that is less natural than that which springs from the very interior of the canvas, an intention that Cottavoz for his part supports by l thickness of the "sensual paste that he accumulates in pastel and chalky tones, thereby being figurative in the sense that he starts from reality, abstract in the sense that he reduces it to its essence": painting, for André Cottavoz, is truly sculpting his canvases (where monochromy is not uncommon) with a trowel, hence the nickname that has been given to him of "Green Monticelli". In Vallauris, where he settled permanently in 1962, André Cottavoz took an interest in enamelled ceramics, which he worked with Roger Collet. 67260779
