In May 1918, Jan Altink was one of the founders of the well-known Groningen artists' group De Ploeg. The name was invented by Jan Altink. He wanted to "exploit" Groningen art and was thinking of churning up earth. This requires a team, hence the name. The Articles of Association did not reflect this aim. A very pragmatic goal was described: … 'Bringing Groningen artists closer together and promoting art life in every way'. De Ploeg had no artistic manifesto. In 1921 he became its secretary and on several occasions acted as a jury member at the circle's exhibitions.

His work is represented in all major museums and collections.
