In the Roman Catholic liturgy, the ciborium is a round cloth that hangs over the ciborium when it contains consecrated wafers. It is a sign of reverence and also a means of distinguishing ciboriums with the Blessed Sacrament from ciboriums with unconsecrated wafers. There is a hole in the middle of the ciborium, because the lids of most ciboriums have an upright cross.
