Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Extraordinary and rare ethnographic museum piece.
The piece featured is a full body sheep sheepdog collar. It is an unusual piece, as not only the spiked collar, but the entire leather structure is preserved.
Designed for a small dog, which was regularly seen at the mercy of wolves.
The spiked collar or "carlanca", so called in Spain, is a piece that has been used extensively throughout history, not only in the Iberian Peninsula, but in all European areas where cattle were affected by wolves. . Attached is a photograph of a painting by Bosch (c. 1450-1516) in which a man wears one around his neck.
Most likely, the use of the strap that makes up the structure, made of leather, served so that the shepherd could easily grab the dog.
A very curious piece worthy of the best cabinet of curiosities. Unique opportunity.
Spain, 19th century or earlier. 67331195
