Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. André Beckers was a Belgian draftsman.
A car accident in 1961 cut his long career in the bud and he didn't make it to the ranks of comics creators who ring a respectable number of bells among comics aficionados, but his output is huge. He was Victor Hubinon's first assistant for his comic book series Buck Danny and worked for or together with big names such as Jean-Michel Charlier, Greg, Hergé and MiTacq.

Under the pseudonym Bek's he illustrated numerous technical drawings for aviation and naval chronicles written by Charlier. From 1959 he drew twenty-six short stories by Oom Wim.
Influenced by Buck Danny, he created his own aviation series, Mac Thomson, in 1949 for the Belgian comics magazine Héroïc-Albums, where he became a colleague of Maurice Tillieux.

moved to Brussels in 1954 and contacted Hergé, whom he had known well since 1942. Hergé gave him some drawing work for Tintin magazine. Too little in Beckers' opinion and he promptly created his own detective series CRIQUET for La Libre Belgique.
He was able to draw both comic and realistic comics and therefore got a lot of work for numerous Belgian magazines and newspapers, including Het Laatste Nieuws, Gazet van Antwerpen and De Standaard. The comics that appeared in these newspapers were further distributed by the agency in France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Canada and South America.

Beckers also befriended Greg and became his main draftsman, especially for episodes of Criquet and Bison et Ouistiti and he also drew many realistic short stories.
In short, a very underestimated artist, who has made beautiful comics.
