Baron Charles de Villemont, a brutal and authoritarian man, marries Mathilde out of interest. The young woman hates this greedy husband and, on arriving in her new home, she realizes very quickly that she is not the only one to hate him... In this 19th century, the nobility is modernizing, finance and industry replace agriculture, and old rivalries resurface in the form of an all-out trade war. In addition, a band of marauders attacks and tortures the notables of the region to rob them. A criminal organization to which the baron does not seem entirely foreign. The stage is set. Hate, jealousy, adultery, there develops around this castle an electric atmosphere which announces some terrible clap of thunder.
