Rivière (Lazarus Riverius) was received as a doctor in 1611 and became a professor at the Faculty of Montpellier in 1622 where he took the chair of Laurent Coudin which he held until his death. There he acquired a great reputation as a practitioner. He was adviser and doctor to King Louis XIII.
His works, mainly his Institutiones medicae, have long served as a teaching text.
His Praxis medica (offered here) contains many therapeutic indications: there is the formula of the anti-emetic potion also called River Potion -
