This is a study intended to be used as a model for a mythological composition
One of Jordaens' usual models posed for this painting, possibly his friend Johan Wiertz (Antwerp c.1587 † after 1666)
In his works Roger d'Hulst insists on the importance that Jordaens gave to these isolated studies of heads, "expression heads" or "tronies" in Flemish, several of which are known and often of similar dimensions.
We note on this canvas the richness of the paste and the brilliance of the execution, the rapid and powerful brushstroke of the artist.

This painting is coming from a private collection, in its original state, with its old varnished and not restored (description below)
The pictorial layer is in quite good state of conservation, with its in-pasta, in spite of some accidents, but not very significant. (Visible on the reproduction)

Concerning its attribution to Jacob Jordaens, I went to Royal Museum of Fine Art at Antwerp with the painting and in the company of Dr. E Vandamme, Scientific Director, we compared it with many works of Jordaens. This comparison was very conclusive and made possible to situate this work around 1655-60, the beginning of the third period of Jordaens. 67385975
